The basic idea is a sci-fi pulp story, with a mix of time travel and espionage.
Set against the backdrop of history as filtered through the lens of classic works of literature.
We follow a team, as they are sent back in time to try to prevent and fix events that threaten to cause disastrous splits to the timeline (think Back to the Future blackboard).
As the series progresses more complex issues and adversaries are introduced that have to be dealt with.
The Idea is that of a older “pulpy” science fiction series that I read half of as a youth, and has stuck in my head to this day. In a “this is both far-fetched pulp and yet something that I could actually see humanity doing one day” level of crazy, in the far future we have discovered time travel, and in our infinite wisdom realized that while we as a society do not like wars, we keep having them, and while there are obvious bad consequences, they do resolve disputes and drive industry.
To that end we will combine the two. Rather than fighting our wars in the streets and on the fields of the future, we will do so in the past. If two countries wanted to resolve a conflict, they would go to the organizing body of “smart” people, who would send a number of soldiers from each side back in time. Inserting them into existing conflicts throughout history, marching with the Romans across Europe, fighting in the trenches of World War 1, or any number of other permutations. Then after a time they would be retrieved, and based on some esoteric “Point Spread” involving numerous things like kills, deaths, missing in actions, or any other random thing, a resolution would be reached.
This is the setting from which we build from. Our characters are soldiers who get involved in what becomes the ultimate result that any sane person could foresee, that things would go wrong, and something would need to be done to fix it. They work to avert and undo disruptions in the past, that would cause damage to the timestream that would have unknowable, but in all estimations catastrophic consequences. From terrorists trying to end the time wars, with blackmail of disaster, to soldiers accidentally killing important people and having to resolve the issue.
Mixing into the premise is the idea that what we know as history and literature are a bit of a mixed bag, with missions based on or inspiring/inspired by classic novels. From Robin Hood and his Merry Men, the Three Musketeers, to the Prisoner of Zenda and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
