Plot Summary
Starting following a soldier in the Time Wars, on his first excursion into Minus Time, as he witnesses the stark reality of the French Revolution. He is unable to deal with the events, and when given the opportunity to “save” someone from being apprehended, he intervenes. Unfortunately leading to the death of Sir Percy Blakeney, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and causing an incident that will require adjustment.
Back in Plus Time, Andre has just come back from her education and integration bringing her from the 12th to 27th century. After her formal induction into the unit, the team is briefed on their apparently simple mission, Finn will be sent back to substitute for Sir Percy, and ensure that key people that had to be smuggled from France to England are, and that history isn’t adjusted, upon arrival they meet their control agent Fitzroy.
This relatively straightforward mission is soon complicated by the appearance of Mongoose, the agent who bungled their previous mission, and had been demoted to desk duty as punishment, claiming to be their local contact. This leads to a confrontation, and revelation that Mongoose may have managed to hack into the databases of highly secure agencies and alter records to get this posting, to possibly embarrass them, or cause more serious damage.
Sent back to hunt him down is another familiar face, Cobra, his second in command from the previous mission, he liaises with the team, and works to try not to immediately capture him, due to internal politics and power struggles going on between agencies in Plus Time.
Finn, Andre & Lucas proceed to setup the crew of the Scarlet Pimpernel, and start to work at rescuing the french aristocrats, unfortunately it appears that Mongoose plans to interrupt the process, and rescue all them himself, with the apparent aid of a young Jean Lefeate, the notorious pirate. While Finn deals with the effects of maintaining a cold relationship with his attractive and intelligent new wife. Eventually it is revealed that Mongoose may be disguised as Fitzroy himself.
Things quickly dissolve into chaos, as alliances and trust start to fray, with the shifting suspicions of who Mongoose might be posing as, and what his end game might be. All the threads converge, when the team moves to rescue the last of the historically accounted for aristocrats, and the relative of Finn’s fake wife, while French authorities having discovered the identity of the Scarlet Pimpernel, move in to capture or kill him, and a plan to flush out Mongoose finally comes to a head all at the same time in a small inn in France.
After the confusing and deadly confrontation, they are shocked to discover that there were in fact two Fitzroy’s, and it appeared that it was in fact Cobra that they were in conflict with the whole time, as a large number of time agents just vanish, after they are all killed.
Back in Plus Time, they are debriefed, and the full details are divulged. It seems that in an attempt to strengthen his agency’s power, and save his own not quite clean skin, the head of the TIA Darrow, when he happened to be the first to find out about the initial incident and death of the Pimpernell, he tried to run an adjustment with his own team. Unfortunately something must have gone wrong, and when no word came back, realized the worst had happened, he had inadvertently caused what he had tried to prevent, a split in the timeline.
To cover his ass, he set up a plan with Mongoose, the First Division was notified, and sent back to perform an adjustment, but it was a double adjustment, they had to both fix the initial issue, but also make sure that the event that caused the split didn’t happen, and Mongoose was there to identify and try to work around an neutralize the agents that would in all likelihood arrive from the other timeline, with the intention of making sure the split occurred. With the revelation of what had happened, and that when looked at in one way they had caused a massive genocide of an entire timeline, they all resolve in order to live with themselves that it was better to justify that as they had stopped the initial split from happening, that they couldn’t have been anyone to send back to confront them, and it was all essentially a bad dream, for the other option was just to weighty to contemplate.
